Initial

  • Who is my immediate supervisor and to whom do I refer in the absence of my supervisor?
  • With whom will I work? What do they do?
  • What do I do?
  • Where do I do it?
  • Are there car parking/transport problems?
  • How is flexi-time, clocking on/off managed?
  • Where do I wash, lunch, find coffee, tea, toilets, etc?
  • Where is the staff notice-board?
  • How do I use the telephone and what restrictions are there?
  • How do I gain access to e-mail and the internet, and what rules and restrictions are there on the use of these facilities?
  • What security arrangements exist for:

- the workplace;

- documents;

- equipment;

- cash and valuables?

  • Is overtime required and will it be paid for?
  • What statutory deductions will be made from my salary/wages? (eg income tax, national insurance and superannuation)
  • How and when will my salary/wages be paid? How can pay be queried?
  • What is my holiday entitlement? When am I entitled to take holiday?
  • What is the position regarding the trade unions and office representative?
  • Whom should I notify if absent through sickness or other cause?
  • Are there any requirements for dress?
  • Have any reasonable adjustments that I need because of a disability been made?
  • What are the arrangements for training, formal and informal?
  • Has all the necessary documentation been completed to allow me to be paid on the first possible pay day?
  • What should be done in the case of fire? (eg the alarm system, fire exits)
  • How do I get medical attention?
  • How do I report an accident?

Subsequently

  • How is the department organised and where does my job fit in?
  • Can I meet relevant staff in other departments?
  • What are the main priorities in the job?
  • What are the limits of my responsibilities?

When to use this document

Use this checklist once a new recruit has started work in order to ensure that he or she fully understands the job and the key information about how the organisation works.
