Occupational health and HR staff do not work in a vacuum when it comes to sickness absence. Their increasingly focused approach to managing absence and rehabilitating employees on long-term sick leave is likely to come to little if employees' own doctors are pulling in a different direction and see their patients' work as part of the problem rather than part of the solution.
