Introduction

A bird flu (avian influenza) pandemic has the potential to affect severely the organisation, its employees and their families, and requires specific planning over and above that made for other disasters (see the organisation's separate disaster contingency plan). The impact of a pandemic on employee sickness absence rates, public transport systems, suppliers and health services is complex and requires the extension of provisions contained in the organisation's primary business continuity plan.
