In October 2008, the European Commission proposed changes to the maternity
leave provisions of the 1992 EU Directive on pregnant workers.

rules The minimum period of maternity leave would be increased from
14 weeks to 18 weeks and women on maternity leave would receive full pay,
though member states could subject this to a ceiling, no lower than the rate
of sick pay.

self-employed In October 2008, the European Commission proposed a new
Directive on equal treatment between self-employed women and men, which would
notably give self-employed women and the "assisting spouses" of the
self-employed the same maternity leave rights as employees.
EU: Commission wants action on work-life
balance On 30 May 2007, the European Commission launched a second round
of consultations with European-level trade union and employers' organisations
on improving the reconciliation of work, private and family life. It suggests the
introduction of new rights to paternity leave, adoption leave and leave to care
for dependants, along with strengthened maternity protection and parental leave
entitlements.
EU social partners: Partners will evaluate
parental leave and work-life balance In July 2007, the central
EU-level social partner organisations announced that they will evaluate their
1995 framework agreement on parental leave, along with other arrangements
supporting parents and work-life balance. The move comes in response to a consultation by
the European Commission. |
