Don't blame me, it's my first day

It’s a big day for Gordon Brown. Although he’s had longer to prepare for his new job than most of us, (it is after all thirteen years since the fabled Granita meeting), I’m sure he’ll still be nervous this morning.

I’m not sure whether there is an HR Department at 10 Downing Street to handle Gordon’s induction, so here are some words of advice on the five things he’s most likely to encounter today:

Meet the new boss - remember to kiss not shake hands. Don’t mention any similarity to Helen Mirren.

Access to the building - No. 10 doesn’t have a lock on the outside so you’ll need to get the policeman to let you in. You’ll be given some special security codes but for goodness sake don’t use them - they’re not for the door to your office.

Smoking policy - the bloke who had the job before you implemented a no-smoking at work policy. But don’t worry; the new law doesn’t apply to the Palace of Westminster so you should be able to have a crafty puff there.

Work out your best route from home to the office - you’ll be living above the shop so getting to the office on time shouldn’t be a problem.

Meet your co-workers - don’t bother getting too friendly, a number of them won’t be around for very long.

I’m sure any other pearls of wisdom would be gratefully received by the new PM.
