I would just like to say well done and congratulate the Iraqi national football team for winning the Asia Cup on Sunday. In a country torn apart by war, where going without electricity and water for weeks on end and facing the dangers of suicide bombers and mass warfare are a normal occurrence, the players pulled together and defeated Australia, Saudi Arabia and South Korea, among others, to a fairytale ending by lifting the Asia Cup.
Due to the country’s current state, the squad did not have the luxury of an HR, or in fact anyone – to help them. The team had to set up their training camp in Jordan and organise their own travel and accommodation. They even arranged their team kitas well as worrying about their families (being unable to contact them) and the prospect of returning to their war-torn home. But playing under these conditions is nothing new to these players, as they have to do this to keep the Iraqi league going while working a second job in order to feed and clothe their families.
Once again, congratulations.
