Pretentious, moi?

Is it 1986? A press release that arrived this morning from the recruitment company Poolia seems to suggest it might be.

The company which, according to its website, rather modestly claims to:

provide qualified specialist staff to core areas of the British economy,

has implemented a ‘new’ performance based incentive for its recruitment staff. A company Porsche, with personalised plates, is awarded to the best performing consultant.

Poolia believe that:

In today’s candidate short market it’s a constant war to recruit and retain the best candidates.

To some people, offering a sports car as an incentive might seem the way to go - especially if they are the sort of people who like red braces, big glasses and filofaxes - but closer examination of the award makes it little less Gordon Gekko and a little more Gordon the Gopher.

There is a Porsche, but just the one. It’s normally handed out on a quarterly basis, so if you’re driving it at Christmas don’t make plans to drive it on your Easter hols, unless you’re pretty sure of the competition.

The plates are personalised, but for the company not the winner. So unless your name is Mr P100LYA then you’re going to have some explaining to do.

None of this will bother the current recipient of course, Mr Tom Cunningham. Poolia were so keen to publicise his success that they rushed out a press release to tell everyone all about it. The release that we received reads, in full, as follows:

The Poolia Porshe…

Top Recruitment Consultant Tom Cunningham now has his very own ‘Poolia Porshe’. As Poolia’s top recruitment consultant of 2006 Tom was given the keys – and the car for the whole of 2007, but the latest addition to the car will mean he really can’t forget who he’s working for!
Tom says

Presumably poor old Tom was lost for words at his good fortune.

Michael Carty:

A company in Milton Keynes had the reverse in operation when I was growing up around there, the car being a punishment for low sales.

It was a Robin Reliant with a "Wot No Sales?" "chad" graffito on the side, and was forced on the unlucky recipient for a month. Though how they were encouraged actually to drive the embarrassmentmobile I don't know.

This would've been in the early 1990s, so MK was clearly way ahead of the curve on 80s revivalism.

This business of using cars as incentives is clearly more complex than I thought.

Tom Cunningham:

Thank you all for you oh so witty coverage of my good fortune.

I have now left Poolia and the Porsche and have upgraded to a Bentley.

Pretentious, Moi?
