If you turned up at work today only to be confronted by a virtually empty office then, instead of starting to panic about your employees' whereabouts, you should have checked the calendar. A quick glance at your, no doubt slightly tacky, corporate promotion desk calendar would have confirmed it was Friday, the day most likely for your staff to have found something to do other than pitch up at work.
According to new research, companies are losing £50 million a year through employees going to the doctor, taking long lunches and arranging meetings near home on a Friday rather than sitting at their desks. Employersafe, a company, which describes itself as providing;
"a new type of Proactive HR system designed to alert your to problems before they arise" (sic)claims that their research is backed up by motoring organisations who assert that the Friday rush hour now starts at around noon.
In response to their belief that more and more workers are seeing Friday afternoon as an unofficial holiday, Employersafe has helpfully developed a software system which detects patterns of absence and recommends appropriate disciplinary action.
I look forward to the development of more new software to advise on how best to cancel Christmas, make babies cry and kick puppies.
