One flew over the cuckoo's desk

An interesting little quiz in the Guardian at the weekend to set thoughts racing about our colleagues in the office. Especially for those of us who still have nightmares over Nurse Ratched.

Do you have someone who always gets into the office extra early and stays late? Do they get hostile when challenged, try to dominate meetings and interrupt others? Do they scrutinise your work and come back with the most nit-picking 'corrections'.

If so, you may have a control freak.

According to the article, control freaks are those amongst us at work who try and control every aspect of the environment. They may see it as being conscientious, but it seems the difference between the control freak and the conscientious worker is that the former's behaviour adversely affects others. In short, they make everyone else's life a fun-free zone.

So, in order to watch out for the control freak who may make everyone else's life a misery, here are some tell-tale signs:

● They obsess over the smallest details
● They micro-manage tasks because they don't trust anyone else to do them as well as they could themselves.
● They pester people; sending e-mails just to get a response.
● They move the goalposts to make sure staff never come up to scratch.
● They think the whole place would fall apart if they weren't there to hold it all together.

But, if you do think you have a control freak in the office don't despair. A study by the University of Bradford Management Centre has found that control freaks are more prone to insomnia, palpitations, high blood pressure and chronic fatigue.

Every cloud….

Some additional, tongue in cheek, advice from our American cousins on recognising and dealing with control freaks. Also, one or two other employee types that we may or may not recognise.
