No, consultant Darren Newman is not literally on holidays, but he fielded some curly questions from frontline HR staff attending his talk on holidays at the XpertHR suite at the Holiday Inn in Harrogate this morning. The event continues this afternoon and tomorrow with Darren again speaking on the same topic.
During his segment Darren looked at the potential of religious discrimination claims in relation to holidays. He said that although there are few claims of religious discrimination lodged a year compared with those for unfair dismissal,
"When claims of religious discrimination do hit you, they hit you with a passion and have the potential to put you on the front of the Daily Mail."Sobering stuff.

Some questions Darren took from delegates included:
"Is it OK to give additional leave to people who are not Christian?
"Can I take away holiday from non-religious people?"
"Can a person accrue holiday leave while they are sick?" and
"Can an employee who takes a holiday, gets sick, and when they return ask to have their time off considered as sick leave rather than holiday?"
After the talk some delegates took the opportunity to have a free Indian head massage at the XpertHR suite to help the update sink in...
