Top 100 employers of gay people - it's a fair cop

This year's list of the 100 best employers of gay people has been published by Stonewall. Not surprisingly, public sector organisations dominate, though the presence of three police forces among the top four organisations may be rather more counter-intuitive if you haven't been following the efforts of various constabularies in this area over recent years.

A full list of the top 100 appears below, but it is also worth downloading the Workplace Equality Index from Stonewall's website as it has lots more interesting information.

The top employer for 2008 is Nacro, the national crime reduction charity. The Greater London Authority comes second. Hampshire and Staffordshire police forces are joint third in the index. Pinsent Masons was named Most Improved Employer and HM Prison Service wins an award for Network Group of the Year.

The top 100 employers of gay people were ranked on criteria ranging from implementation of effective equality policies to practical demonstration of good practice in recruitment and mentoring and how they engage with lesbian and gay staff, customers and service users. The 240 employers who entered the 2008 index had to get a minimum score of 71% to be placed in the top 100, up from 40% in 2005.

As it happens, XpertHR has a case study of Staffordshire Police's efforts to become a gay-friendly organisation (subscription required), and another on Nacro's diversity strategy (subscription required). We have also spoken to Lloyds TSB (subscription required), one of the top private sector employers in the list, about its diversity agenda.
