Assisting employees on a return from maternity leave

It’s easy for employers to forget the importance of ensuring employees’ smooth reintroduction into the workplace following maternity leave. XpertHR’s new model policy on reintroduction into the workplace on return from maternity leave [subscription required] sets out an approach that employers can take.

The policy covers issues such as:

- keeping employees informed during maternity leave, for example by maintaining reasonable contact and making use of keeping-in-touch days;

- contacting employees shortly before their maternity leave ends to set out any arrangements for their return;

- short-term arrangements on return to work, such as catch-up meetings, re- familiarisation with systems and information on changes in the workplace, and training needs; and

- long-term issues, including a gradual handing over of workload, the possibility of a phased return to work, and an acknowledgment that flexible working arrangements might be considered.

In addition, XpertHR has added a new model letter to an employee returning from maternity leave [subscription required], while our policy on varying employees' hours on return from maternity leave [subscription required] may also be of use.
