HR has been busy making changes to the way new employees are recruited and selected. IRS's latest survey (subscription required) of changes and trends in recruitment and selection has identified one clear winner: the internet.
Our three-part report is based on the experience of 133 organisations - covering a combined workforce of more than 1 million people - and shows that employers are now using the internet in all aspects of the recruitment and selection process.
We looked at changes and trends in three areas: candidate attraction; the application process; and, assessment and selection. In each of these key areas, the internet has grown in use and coverage.
Specifically, recruitment online has increased most in the area of candidate attraction , (subscription required). Most forms of electronic-based hiring - from corporate websites and organisational intranets to general and specialist job boards - have seen developments during 2006 and 2007.
The application process (subscription required) has also undergone something of an internet-based makeover.
Online application forms have undergone more change in the past two years than any other means of applying for a job. Employers have introduced online application forms; and where already in use, increased their use of online application forms; or, made improvements to existing online application forms so as to make them more effective.
In terms of assessment and selection, our survey (subscription required) records growth in the use of online psychometric testing. This was rated by employers as the second most effective means of improving candidate selection.
The internet, it would seem, has added many more strings to HR's recruitment and selection bow. And early indications would suggest that it is doing so effectively and in harmony with other more traditional methods.

I have been applying for jobs and think online applications are great! I can't imagine what it used to be like when you had to fill them all out by hand - nightmare! It's good that psychometric tests are done online as well, this makes it much easier to narrow down candidates without making them go all the way to an assessment centre or similar.
