Receivers blow final whistle on Gretna jobs

gretna.jpgThere is bad news on the employment front from the world of football, where Scottish Premier League side Gretna has run out of money and made its remaining 40 players and staff redundant.

Gretna went into administration in March, when its owners withdrew financial support, and there were fears that it would be unable to finish the season.

Although a short-term rescue package put together by the Scottish Premier League saw the club through, the League also imposed a 10-point penalty, guaranteeing that Gretna would drop down to the First Division if it survived its financial problems.

The receivers are reported to be talking to potential new owners, but the club currently has debts of £4 million. Even its website disappeared earlier today.

It's not at all clear what this all says about employee motivation, but despite its difficulties and the prospect of a very final whistle indeed, Gretna ended the season last week with a 1 - 0 win over Hearts.
