Equal pay reviews: the view from the private sector

The IRS survey of pay equality in the public sector found (subscription required) that the majority of local authorities have conducted, or are in the process of conducting, an equal pay audit or review.

As you know, no obligation exists for private sector companies to ensure that their pay structures are equality-proofed. There is, however, currently a debate on this subject.

IRS is conducting research to further this debate through examining the challenges facing HR practitioners and specialists. Has your organisation conducted an equal pay review? Or are you interested in finding out more about the process? Taking part in our new online survey will ensure that your views and experiences are counted.

Our research report will examine:

  • the arguments for and against conducting an equal pay review or audit;
  • the data requirements for a equal pay review;
  • the role of consultants and trade unions; and
  • HR practitioner views on equal pay initiatives.

You can take part in our entirely confidential survey research here.

Contrary to the impression given in some recent press reports, equal pay reviews are not entirely unheard of in the private sector. For example, research conducted by IRS in 2006 detailed the efforts of two household names - Virgin Mobile and Nationwide (subscription required).

It would be great to hear about the views and experiences of other private sector businesses - either here or via our survey.
