Health-related benefits are fighting fit in 2008

Tai chi, line dancing and free fruit. Not always the most likely of combinations, but these are among the more unusual health-related benefits offered by employers taking part in our latest annual benefits and allowances survey (subscription required).

Flu jabs, subsdised acupuncture and on-site massage also rank among the more esoteric options.

Overall, health-related benefits have shown strong growth over the past year, assuming an increasingly central role in reward offerings, according to the second part of our annual survey of benefits and allowances.

Provision of all but two of the top 10 health benefits increasing in comparison with 2007 (subscription required).

The most commonly-offered health-related benefit is paid time off work for medical appointments, cited by four-fifths (80.1%) of respondents.

The next most common are private medical insurance (69.3%), followed by counselling/ employee assistance programmes (67.1%), and permanent health insurance (41.2%).
