Number of employment tribunal claims lodged rises again

The Tribunals Service annual report shows that over 45,000 more employment tribunal cases were received in 2007-08 than the previous year.

The number of claims received was 189,348, compared to 143,474 in 2006-07. Meanwhile, the number of claims disposed of decreased from 107,412 to 86,237. Once again, an increase in multiple claims is the culprit.

The report covers all tribunals, not just the employment tribunals, so more detail on the jurisdiction mix of the claims and compensation awarded is expected from the Employment Tribunals Service - although such information was not published until September last year.

The report is available on the Tribunals Service website.
