Model policy on shift swapping

A common way for employers to give employees some flexibility in their working hours is to allow them to swap shifts with colleagues. Use XpertHR's new model shift-swap policy [subscription required] to see how it can be done.

The model policy, written by Sarah Bull of law firm Bates Wells & Braithwaite, covers issues such as:

- how shift swapping can aid flexible working;

- how shift swapping can be balanced with the needs of the business;

- what process can be used to agree to a shift swap;

- what limits should be placed on shift swapping (for example, only allowing employees at the same level of seniority to swap); and

- what happens if the shift swapping system is abused (for example, the disciplinary issues if an employee does not appear for his or his part of the shift swap).

The policy is accompanied by a model shift-swap agreement form [subscription required].
