This month's top 10 HR questions

Throughout November what were HR professionals asking? The top 10 most frequently visited FAQs on XpertHR in the last month include questions on holiday pay and casual workers, requests for information on an employee from the police, long-term sickness and dismissal, maternity rights, and whether or not making a full-time position part time due to a reduction in work comes under the definition of redundancy.

  1. Does an employer have to pay holiday pay to its casual workers?
  2. Can employers use an intranet to advise employees of changes to policies and procedures?
  3. Where an employee who has exhausted all entitlement to sick pay is to be dismissed on grounds of ill health will he or she be entitled to any payment throughout his or her notice period?
  4. Where a baby is born before 24 weeks of pregnancy but lives for a short period only, will the mother be entitled to maternity leave and pay?
  5. Would an employer be at risk if it terminated the contract of an employee on long-term sickness absence before the employee’s entitlement to contractual sick pay had been exhausted?

  9. Can an employee who has not been employed by her employer for 26 weeks by the qualifying week claim any financial assistance throughout her maternity leave?
  10. Does an employee still qualify for statutory maternity pay if she leaves her employment?
