IRS research [subscription required] conducted in 2008 found that where employers were able to quantify their absence costs they averaged £516 per year for every employee in an organisation.
Of course, it your organisation happens to have a below average absence rate - think small private sector organisations in London - then these costs are significantly reduced. Things are unlikely to look so rosy if your business is a large housing association.
So what can be done? Well, if you want access to the very latest benchmarking information on staff absence rates and costs you can take part in this year's IRS staff absence and turnover survey.
This is a confidential survey which asks for information on your organisation's 2008 absence and turnover rates. Taking part not only guarantees you a complimentary copy of this year's report when it becomes available, but also gives you instant access to last year's report too.

More information on the survey is available here.
PS. If you're a subscriber to XpertHR you can also look out for the results of our recently completed absence initiatives survey. This report will analyse what initiatives work and what don't and, crucially, what impact they are likely to have on absence rates.
