Employment tribunal claims for 2008 to 2009 - provisional figures

You wait forever for the employment tribunal statistics - and then two sets come along at once. Well, not exactly, as the figures for April 2008 to February 2009 provided to XpertHR by the Tribunals Service today are only provisional, and therefore subject to change. They do, however, give an indication of what the final figures are likely to look like.

The provisional figures appear to reflect the change in the economic climate over recent months, with 47,155 unfair dismissal claims having been accepted up to February 2009, compared to 40,941 in the year from April 2007 to the end of March 2008. Redundancy pay claims are up from 7,313 to 9,220, while claims for a failure to inform and consult over redundancy have risen from 4,480 to 7,382.

Equal pay claims remain high - at 42,416 - reflecting the new local authority and NHS claims that continue to be brought. However, this figure is down on the 62,706 equal pay claims accepted in the year ending March 2008.

While the number of religion and belief and sexual orientation cases accepted remains relatively stable - 746 compared to 709 the previous year, and 541 compared to 582 the previous year, respectively - the number of claims brought under the most recent discrimination jurisdiction, age, continues to rise. The provisional figures show that 3,430 age discrimination cases were accepted to February 2009, compared to 2,949 in the year up to March 2008.

No figures on compensation are available. The final official employment tribunal statistics for April 2008 to the end of March 2009 will be published later this year.

The full provisional figures provided by the Tribunals Service are available on XpertHR.

Grateful if you would tell me how many employment/industrial tribunals there are in the U.K.

Many thanks in advance.
