1 October 2009 statutory redundancy pay increase

My colleague Sarah Welfare telephoned BERR today about the Budget one-off rise in the limit on a week’s pay for statutory redundancy pay purposes and was told the change would take place on 1 October 2009.

    Does this mean that if someone’s is made redundant and does not leave until after 1st October, they will be entitled to the new higher amount, or will they only get the higher amount if the redundancy is *announced* after 1st October?

    The likelihood is that the increase will be relevant where the “event giving rise to it” occurs on or after 1 October. For these purposes this would be the date the individual’s employment ended. But we won’t know for sure what the Government is planning until it publishes its intentions.
