Most employees can feel fairly secure in the knowledge that their home will not be vandalised as a consequence of their job. Not necessarily so for teachers.
According to a report in The Times (on its website), members of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers heard at its annual conference how teachers have had their homes and cars vandalised by pupils. Unsurprisingly, lack of discipline by schools and parents is blamed. A survey by the union (on its website) has also found that nearly one in four school and college employees have experienced physical violence from a student.
Although teachers’ working environment is not typical of the rest of the population, the risk of violence from other staff or customers is not non-existent in other spheres. XpertHR’s model Violence at work policy and procedure (subscription required) can be used to set out an employer’s policy on violence at work and the procedures that should be followed to reduce the risk to health and safety.
