Google's approach to staff interaction: manage the cafe queues so staff chat

Googleplex.JPG
Google's reputation stands before it (market capitalisation in excess of $100bn, 20,000 plus staff) ) and I for one would like to visit Google HQ in California - known as the Googleplex to get a sense of how the organisation works and to see for myself if it is as good as people say it is. However, as that probably won't happen any time soon I'll look to those who have been.

I particularly enjoyed this insight from Laurie Reuttimann who attended a recent event at the Googleplex:

The VP of HR, Laszlo Bock, told us that cafeteria lines are monitored because the management team wants you to stand in line long enough to bump into your colleagues and chat. So if you like your activities monitored, and if you like perks such as free food and a creative & casual work environment, Google is for you.

Brilliant. I now realise that the queues in the staff restaurant here at XpertHR towers must be carefully monitored to ensure they are always sufficiently long to facilitate conversations between colleagues.

Indeed . . . I'd like the move to free food :-)
