The IRS one-day conference on Managing disability at work - from the XpertHR Group - will cover the latest legislation, policy and practice on employing disabled people. The conference takes place in London on 10 September, and to help XpertHR subscribers who are attending get the most out of it, we’ve put together a disability resource pack rounding up the latest, and forthcoming, articles on disability compliance, good practice and benchmarking.
The pack includes information on recent disability discrimination case law, case studies on how organisations are supporting people with disabilities and promoting equal treatment, exclusive benchmarking statistics on the disability compliance and good practice steps that organisations are taking, and information on forthcoming changes to disability discrimination law.
Complementing this information, the IRS conference will cover such issues as:
- the current law on disability and the areas where employers traditionally come unstuck, as well as the changes proposed in the forthcoming Equality Act;
- the rights of carers following the ECJ decision in Coleman v Attridge Law;
- tricky issues around recruitment, including at what point a candidate should declare a disability, and when it’s ok to ask;
- dealing with mental ill health;
- the consulting lengths that employers are expected to go to before an incapability dismissal; and
- the essential guide to avoiding disability faux pas and banishing “David Brent” from the workplace.
During lunch there will be an opportunity to test your disability knowledge in a fast-paced informative challenge, facilitated by Phil Friend, the UK’s foremost consultant on disability matters, and co-author of the forthcoming XpertHR good practice guide on employing disabled workers. As well as networking with other employers with an interest in managing disability in the workplace, you will be able to meet employment law editor Jeya Thiruchelvam, editor of the equal opportunities section of the XpertHR employment law manual, and Martin Couzins, the XpertHR user development editor.
If you haven’t already booked to attend, a limited number of places on the IRS conference on managing disability at work are still available.
And, if you’re an XpertHR subscriber, remember that one of the advantages is that you’re entitled to a £50 discount (per delegate). To claim the discount, just enter the code XP001 in brackets after the surname of the first delegate on the booking form, eg “Smith (XP001)” (or quote the code if you’re making a telephone booking).
And remember that this is your conference - if you’re coming along and you want to be sure that a particular disability issue is going to be covered, let us know about it beforehand.
