Government confirms extension of paternity rights

Plans to allow fathers to benefit from up to six months' additional paternity leave if the mother returns to work before the end of the maternity leave period to which she is entitled are to go ahead despite the recession, the Government has confirmed (on the News Distribution Service website).

There had been some doubt as or whether or not the proposals would be scrapped, with suggestions that they would cost too much for employers during the recession. The Government has also said that the law will be in force by April 2010, but will have effect for parents of children due on or after 3 April 2011.
