Public sector pay 2010/11- the Government's approach

The letter from Liam Byrne, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, to the chairs of the public sector pay review bodies has now been published on the Office of Manpower Economics website
The four short paragraphs setting out the Government's approach to pay awards have generated pages of coverage. The letter confirms that the Government favours keeping the multi-year pay awards already in place for teachers, NHS workers and the police.
However, it proposes a pay freeze for senior groups, in spite of the fact that the three-year pay award currently in place for the senior civil service (subscription required) was proposed by the Government in its evidence to the Review Body on Senior Salaries for 2008.
