CBI predicts the next decade will see a growing "flexiforce"

The CBI has published a report on The shape of business: The next 10 years (on the CBI website), identifying the trends it expects to see in how business will develop over the next decade.

The report includes predictions of how workforce dynamics will change as a result of the recession, including the greater use of a flexible workforce.

Trends identified relating to the workforce over the next 10 years include:

  • the development of skills roadmaps, with clear links to the corporate goals of the organisation;
  • a preference for multi-skilled staff leading to employees being selected for a career within an organisation, rather than for a particular job;
  • employers asking for greater flexibility from the workforce, for example with a more extensive use of annualised hours contracts and zero-based hours;
  • payment in time, rather than money, to become the new bonus, for example through the increased use of sabbaticals; and
  • a smaller core of permanent staff, with increased use of freelancers, consultants and temporary workers.

You can download the report from the CBI website (it's worth a look, if only for the particularly attractive diagrams).
