German court looks kindly on "Robin Hood" bank employee

A German court has given a suspended sentence to a bank employee who transferred around £7m from rich to poor customers, according to the BBC website.

The employee, who has been called the "Robin Hood banker", gave overdrafts to customers who would not normally qualify for them and then used funds from rich customers to disguise this during the bank's monthly audit of overdrafts. The bank made a loss of more than £1m when customers were unable to pay back the overdrafts.

The German court noted that the employee did not take any money for herself, had confessed immediately, had lost her job and had started to pay the money back. It therefore gave her a 22-month suspended prison sentence.
