Labour to increase paternity leave

Under Labour, fathers will be entitled to four weeks’ paternity leave according to a report in the Sunday Times (on the Times website). The proposal is one of a number of family-friendly measures to be included in Labour’s election manifesto. The right to request a flexible pattern of work will be extended to all employees.

The Government has already confirmed that it intends to go ahead with plans to allow fathers to benefit from up to six months’ additional paternity leave if the mother returns to work before the end of the maternity leave period to which she is entitled. A consultation on draft regulations (Choice for families: additional paternity leave and pay - consultation on draft Regulations (PDF format, 687K) (on the BIS website)) closed on Friday 20 November 2009.

The XpertHR employment law manual (subscription required) includes details of the law on paternity leave, paternity pay and the right to request flexible working.

Great information about employment. In my opinion the Government have decided to put plans allowing fathers to share maternity leave, and plans to increase paid maternity leave from nine to twelve months, on hold as they are concerned about the cost to businesses during the recession. Thanks......
