More than 13 million working days a year are lost due to stress, according to the BBC. Employers who continue to ignore work-related stress do so at their peril, as the link between absence and stress has yet again been confirmed by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.
However, some employers are finding increasingly effective ways to tackle work-related ill-health. This brings improvements to business, as absence rates are cut and productivity is increased. Many of the steps employers can take are simple, whereas other steps require more investment, but reap greater rewards. The one day IRS conference on managing stress and absence which takes place in London on 12 November, will help employers to identify stress in the workplace and brings together lessons learned on how to improve employee wellbeing. The conference will also explain the link between stress and the law and provide guidance on how occupational health can help with employee stress.
At XpertHR we have put together a stress and absence resource pack to help those attending prepare for the conference. This includes case studies showing employers’ successful programmes in managing stress; step-by-step guides on managing long- and short-term absence caused by employee ill-health; and an explanation of the law on disability discrimination, as mistreatment of employee stress can result in a successful disability discrimination claim against an employer.
