Pay data sets low baseline for 2010 pay rises

With the busiest months of the pay setting calendar now upon us, employers can turn to some bang up-to-date salary data from CELRE, published exclusively on XpertHR Job Pricing, to inform their decisions.

Annual reports published in the final few weeks of 2009 as part of CELRE's core business survey cover staff working in HR and personnel, finance and accounts, and sales and marketing roles.

There is also fresh data for engineers and technicians, and for the distribution and media industries.

New pay data is also available this week for IT staff, as part of CELRE's twice-a-year Computer Staff Salary Survey.

The headline findings show a slowdown in pay rises during the course of 2009 as the recession kicked in, with basic pay continuing to head upwards but at a much slower rate than in earlier years.

But cuts in bonus payments meant that some employees - particularly at senior levels - actually took home less overall in 2009 than they had done in 2008.

A detailed analysis of the data reveals that while those who continued to get a bonus saw the overall level of their pay package remain steady, some employees simply got no bonus at all during 2009.

The CELRE salary surveys for XpertHR Job Pricing enable employers to understand salary ranges for jobs at all levels and functions within their organisation. Detailed breakdowns are also available by region, industry and, where appropriate, qualifications.

In addition to an annual PDF report, subscribers are able to carry out their own analysis using the XpertHR online Job Pricing tool to create specific refinement criteria that match their needs. Participants can also see their own data shown alongside industry medians and averages.

This year's surveys show that pay rises have been depressed across the whole economy, with no sector or profession seeing pay and bonuses increase as fast in 2009 as they did in 2008. Headline increases in basic pay plus bonus were:

  • Computer staff - 1.2%
  • HR and personnel staff - 0.8%
  • Finance and accounts staff - 1.3%
  • Sales staff - 3.1%
  • Marketing staff - 0.5%
  • Engineers and technicians - 1.4%
  • Media industry - 0%
