An advert requesting “very reliable and hardworking” workers has been branded “discriminatory” by Job Centre Plus, which refused to place the ad as it considered it discriminated against “unreliable workers”, according to the Daily Telegraph.
Has political correctness gone too far?! It may not come as a surprise to more knowledgeable HR practitioners that “unreliable workers” are not currently protected by anti-discrimination laws. The Department of Work and Pensions has clarified the position by confirming there is no ban on adverts requesting reliable workers and that the advert in question has now been posted.
Employers are still clearly confused when it comes to what is and isn’t allowed when recruiting staff. We often receive queries from employers who are understandably keen to choose the correct wording for job advertisements and application forms. Questions that we have answered for employers in the XpertHR FAQ section include:
- Can you include a preferred age range in a job advert?
- Can you specify a minimum number of years’ service in a job advert?
- Can an employer stipulate an age limit for a job?
- Can you ask for applicants’ date of birth on application forms?
- Can you stipulate in a job advert that candidates must be “recent graduates”?
- Are employers still allowed to use job titles including the words “senior” and “junior”?
