Local government workers face pay freeze in 2010

Unions representing 1.4 million local government services workers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland have been told that their members will not be offered a pay increase for 2010/11.
The employers' announcement of the pay freeze, without any negotiation, has outraged the unions, which had submitted a claim for an increase of 2.5% or £500 a year, whichever is greater. Unison, Unite and the GMB have said they will now hold an urgent meeting to determine their plan of action.

In 2009, local government services workers received a pay increase of 1%, with 1.25% for the lowest paid, from 1 April (subscription required).

The employers have said that other local government employees, including chief officers, chief executives and craft workers, will also not be offered a pay rise. These groups have not yet submitted their claims for 2010.
