The rise and fall of unfair dismissal awards

To acknowledge the decrease in the maximum compensatory award for unfair dismissal, we’ve put together a table (subscription required) showing the rise, and now fall, of the maximum award since 1999.

The Employment Relations Act 1999 significantly increased the maximum award from £12,000 to £50,000. It also linked future awards to the RPI for September of the previous year. We’ve seen a steady increase in the maximum award since 1999. This is the first time since the introduction of the provision in the Employment Relations Act 1999 that the maximum unfair dismissal compensatory award has fallen.
