TUC: Unions willing to push for pay increases in 2010

The recession has taken the heat out of pay awards, with pay freezes becoming the norm for many as employers, employees and unions worked together to minimise job losses by embracing pay restraint. But the TUC warns that trade unions may not be so willing to accept a second consecutive year of pay freezes (external website) in 2010.

TUC deputy general secretary Frances O'Grady is expected to confirm that unions are willing to push for higher pay increases in 2010 at her speech to the TUC pay bargaining conference in London today (Tuesday 16 February 2010). O'Grady will say:

Unions have sensibly accepted pay freezes where it genuinely helps to keep people in work. But union negotiators are wise to employers exaggerating the need for pay restraint just so they can boost profits. [...] With inflation rising, it is only right that both private and public sector staff should look to pay increases in the year ahead.

David Cameron, meanwhile, has promised a hardline stance on the unions if the Conservatives are returned to power in the 2010 general election.
