HR blogs and blogging habits (5): The top six HR blogs revealed

We asked respondents to the survey what they consider to be the best HR blog. We're very pleased to report that XpertHR's Employment Intelligence blog received a healthy number of responses. But in the interests of avoiding any accusations of bias, Employment Intelligence is excluded from the list of best HR blogs presented here. Six front runners emerged.

The top six HR blogs in 2010

  • 1= In joint first place, we find Punk Rock HR (external website) (which author Laurie Ruettimann describes as "an anti-establishment website where I try to speak truth to power") and Fistful of Talent (external website) ("Recruiters, HR, consultants and corporate types on all things Talent").
  • My Hell is Other People (external website) (the musings of "a British HR Director caught in a Sartrian nightmare and trying to see the philosophical side of life.").
  • HR Bartender (external website) (HR consultant Sharlyn Lauby offers "a friendly place to discuss workplace issues" with the odd foodie touch thrown in for good measure).
  • Flipchart Fairytales (external website) (Consultant Rick offers his "reflections on business, the world of work and the general organisational crap that we all have to put up with in the course of our employment.").
  • Jon Ingham's Strategic HCM Blog (external website) (Consultant Jon Ingham's "thoughts on moving from HR to HR 2.0 and human capital management [HCM]"). Ingham has also recently written a very good piece for personneltoday.com: Social media at work: breaking down barriers to communication.

This list represents a fine snapshot of some of the best and most lively HR blogs currently out there, demonstrating that respondents to our survey have exceptional taste in HR blogs. But there are a great many other notable HR blogs out there, and it should be emphasised here that the above list represents only one particular measure of HR blog quality and influence.

A number of online sources present separate listings of the most influential HR blogs. Technorati.com, for example, provides a dynamic ranking of the most authoritative HR blogs (external website). Technorati's rankings measure the authority of blogs, including what it describes as each "site's standing and influence in the blogosphere", and its topicality within its content category.

However, it is interesting to note that - at the time of writing at least - most of the top six HR blogs according to respondents to our survey also rank highly in Technorati's listing.

Whether you're a seasoned HR blogger or are just considering what HR blogs and blogging might have to offer you, I hope that this week's series of themed blog posts has proven interesting and perhaps even inspiring.

I'd be very interested indeed to hear your own views on HR blogging - get in touch by e-mail, by Twitter, or by leaving a comment below.

Thank you for the comment, Jon.

The Connecting HR "tweet-up" in London on Monday looks set to be a great event, and myself and a number of other members of the XpertHR editorial team will be in attendance. This promises to be a very good view into what microblogging (via Twitter and other platforms) can offer to HR professionals and employment practitioners.

Kind regards

Michael

Hi Michael, good list. I'd add, Scott McArthur's Rant - cracks me up - http://mcarthursrant.blogspot.com/ Also for all things HR technology, Steve Boese http://steveboese.squarespace.com/ I have an interest in this so forgive, but HPA on human capital, though new, is aiming high: http://www.hpa-group.com/

Hi Stuart

Thanks very much indeed for the comment, and for your recommendations for other top HR blogs!

Please bear in mind that the top six HR blogs listed above reflect those voted for by participants in our 2010 mini-survey of HR blogs and blogging habits. A great many other blogs received smaller numbers of mentions, and therefore couldn't be listed here.

I'd like to encourage everybody reading this page to submit lists of their favourite HR blogs (whether from the UK or worldwide) via the comments facility here. I'm always interested to find out about highly-rated HR blogs I might not yet have happened across, and I'm sure the same is true for many readers of Employment Intelligence. If we get a decent list of HR blog recommendations here, I'll gladly compile them into a follow-up post on reader's picks of the best HR blogs!

Kind regards

Michael

Thanks for recognizing HR Bartender. I'm a big fan of all the blogs on the list and honored to be included with such rock stars. Cheers!

My pleasure, Sharlyn, and thanks for the comment! The high placing for www.hrbartender.com is richly deserved!

And I'm sure all the other top six HR bloggers - as identified by participants in our survey of HR blogs and blogging habits - will be proud to be considered "rock stars"!

Kind regards

Michael

Rick:

Thanks for this folks. I'm pleased to be in such good company, especially as I have posted next to sod-all in recent weeks.

I will be at the Tweet-Up too. I'll see you there. Mine's a pint of Adnams, btw.

Thanks very much for the comment, Rick, and for the fine blog!

Look forward to meeting you on Monday!

Kind regards

Michael

This is such an exciting area, and to be able to see which blogs readers consider to be the top 5 should help us all improve our own efforts. ETS has only started blogging (HR means business) in the last two months - but heres hoping we can trouble the big boys in 2010!

Thanks for the comment, Ed, and it's great to hear of another new HR blog getting started! Looks like you're off to a good start, and all the best with it!

Kind regards

Michael
