An American doctor is still working at the age of 100 and has had over 60 years in practice as an obstetrician, reports the Daily Telegraph website.
Dr Walter Watson from Augusta, Georgia qualified in 1947 and served in the Korean War before returning to his practice in Georgia. He says he has delivered 18,000 babies during the course of his career, including one who is now a fellow doctor at the University Hospital in Augusta, where he works. However, Dr Watson admits that all the babies "start blending in together" after a while and he only remembers the difficult births clearly.
Although he gave up delivering babies when his eyesight started to fail, Dr Watson still does his rounds at the hospital's nursing stations and operating rooms. He says that he has no plans to retire.
It's worth noting that, had Dr Watson been required to retire at the age of 65, he would have been deprived of about half of his years practising medicine.
New IRS research on the default retirement age [subscription required] has just been published. It has found that that three-quarters of employers surveyed have retained a contractual retirement age and the same number do not wish to see the default retirement age abolished or raised above 65.
