Employment tribunal claimant "lunged at judge with meat cleaver"

An employment tribunal judge had a lucky escape when an unsuccessful claimant threatened him with a meat cleaver, the the Daily Mail website has reported.

Eyewitnesses at the Reading Employment Tribunal Centre said that, on losing his claim, Mohammed Choudhury shouted at the judge "You threw out my case!" and lunged at him with a meat cleaver. Barrister Andrew Burns quickly went up to Mr Choudhury and shouted "What on earth do you think you are doing?", before talking to him for 10 minutes until the police arrived.

The incident raises questions over security in employment tribunals, where emotions can inevitably run high. Visitors to the tribunal centre are not required to undergo searches and Mr Burns said there had been calls for more security measures to be introduced.
