London 2012: how employers can support employees volunteering for the Olympic Games

The application process for the estimated 70,000 volunteering roles at the London 2012 Olympic Games is open until 27 October 2010. With employers facing up to successful applicants needing long periods of time off in summer 2012, we provide an example policy showing how employers can support those who wish to volunteer during the Olympics [subscription required].

The London 2012 Olympic Games (on the London 2012 website) run from 27 July 2012 until 12 August 2012, while the London 2012 Paralympic Games run from 29 August 2012 to 9 September 2012. Employees who volunteer for both the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games will need to take at least 20 days off work in a short period of time in summer 2012. They will also be required to attend a selection event and subsequent training sessions if successful.

The model policy covers issues such as:

  • why the employer should provide support for volunteers;
  • what volunteering for the Olympic Games involves;
  • why it's important that employees inform employees that they have applied to volunteer for the Olympic Games;
  • requests for time off to attend a selection event or training session;
  • requests for time off for volunteering work during the Olympic Games; and
  • special leave arrangements, including carry-over of holiday, "buying" extra holiday and volunteering days.
