Policies and documents: the 10 most popular additions in 2010

Over 150 new model policies and documents have been added to XpertHR in 2010. But what have been the most popular? The XpertHR employment intelligence blog provides a round-up.

policies.gifNew legisation has meant that policies on additional paternity leave, statutory requests in relation to study or training, fit notes and the Equality Act 2010 have been popular. As always, specific disciplinary, grievance and redundancy issues cause headaches for employers. Meanwhile, our written statement of terms and conditions of employment has been used often by our small-business subscribers.

Note: All links below require a subscription.

10. Volunteering: Policy on staff volunteering for the Olympic Games Use this model policy to explain how your organisation will support employees who wish to do volunteer work for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

9. Grievance procedures: Letter explaining that a frivolous or trivial grievance issue will not be dealt with under the grievance procedure Use this letter to explain to an employee that a grievance that he or she has raised will not be dealt with under the grievance procedure because it is frivolous or trivial.

8. Equal opportunities: Questionnaire for obtaining information on prohibited conduct under the Equality Act 2010 Use this questions form to familiarise yourself with the form that an individual who thinks that he or she has been discriminated against because of a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010 will send to the employer to gather further information. There is also an answers form through which the employer can reply.

7. Probation: Probation policy Use this model policy to set out a probationary procedure for all new employees and (at the employer's discretion) for existing employees transferring into different roles.

6. Sickness and sick pay: Statement of fitness for work This is a sample version of the statement of fitness for work (or "fit note") that a doctor can give to an employee as evidence of whether or not he or she is able to go to work. It replaces the sick note from 6 April 2010. Employers can use the sample form to familiarise themselves with the format of the fit note.

5. Disciplinary procedures: Procedure in the event of an employee going off sick during a disciplinary process Use this model policy to set out what happens when an employee goes off sick during the disciplinary process.

4. Redundancy: Letter informing an employee of possible redundancy Use this model letter to confirm to an affected employee the reasons for the redundancy situation and an overview of the redundancy procedure.

3. Contracts: Written statement of terms and conditions of employment Use this model statement to provide a written statement of terms and conditions of employment in the form of an employment contract to an employee whose contract is to last for one month or more.

2. Statutory requests in relation to study or training: Policy on the right to make a request in relation to study or training Use this model policy to communicate your organisation's approach to requests in relation to study or training and set out the law that gives certain employees the statutory right to make a request in relation to study or training.

And the winner is . . .

1. Paternity rights: Company paternity leave policy (employees whose child has an expected week of birth beginning on or after 3 April 2011) Use this model policy to guide managers and employees in relation to employees' entitlement to both ordinary and additional paternity leave and pay where the expected week of childbirth begins on or after 3 April 2011.
