Unauthorised absence

Some employers will experience higher than usual levels of unauthorised absence from work after the Christmas period while a general feeling of post-Christmas malaise prevails.

However, it is in employers’ interests to deal with unauthorised absence before it becomes a major problem. Unauthorised absence is where the employee does not have a statutory or contractual right, or the employer’s permission, to be absent from work. If there is no good reason for the absence it will normally amount to a disciplinary matter.

The current series of XpertHR’s Topic of the Week (subscription required) looks at unauthorised absence. In the first article in the series, Sarah-Marie Williams of Clyde & Co LLP provides an overview of this topic. Future articles will be a case study, a checklist to help employers deal with and reduce unauthorised absence and some frequently asked questions.
