Below-inflation pay awards: The 'new normal' in 2011?

Below-inflation pay awards remain a reality for the majority of UK workers in 2011. Latest data from the XpertHR pay databank suggest that the squeeze on living standards is likely to continue well into 2011.

The median whole economy pay award for the three months to 30 April 2011 was worth 2% (subscription required). The headline pay award is 3.2 percentage points below the current rate of retail prices index (RPI) inflation (which stands at 5.2%).

So what chance is there that pay awards might catch up with or overtake inflation over the remaining months of 2011?
