When I started my career I worked for Debenhams in sales. They had a need for additional Trainers and thats when I got my first taste of training. I enjoyed this and discovered HR as a potential career route. I moved on to Selfridges and did a more generalist role with recruitment and ER as key aspects.
I then decided I needed to get experience in a unionised environment and managed to get a role as Staff Relations Officer with Ford Motor Co (who says HR skills aren't transferable between sectors). Did a number of roles there and finished as an Employee Relations Supervisor. With this experience under my belt I was able to get a Regional HRD role with Grand Metropolitan. Then moved to Bass as an HRD.
I found that as an HRD I was doing a lot on acquisitions and disposals plus organisation design. My first love was learning and development so I decided to take the plunge and set up my own Executive Coaching business. This has certainly used my early sales experince and some new skills. I am once again energised about what I do and really enjoy my new life
