CIPD conference 2011 themes: employee engagement, leadership and performance

Most of us didn't get to this month's CIPD annual conference in Manchester so here is a round up of the debates and themes, followed by a round-up of  other developments related to HR strategy.

XpertHR blogger Rachel Suff summarises the themes of the UK HR professional body's major annual event, and highlights an interesting employee engagement engagement case study about a hospice for children.

In the keynote address former Tesco chief executive Terry Leahy told delegates that "the first duty of leaders is to find out the truth about their organisations, so they can set the right goals and inspire people towards positive change" according to People Management magazine.

Leahy also had some messages for HR about designing job roles and processes:

"HR has not been great at understanding that a job role doesn't exist in isolation. It's part of a process to do something,"

But Leahy's talk wasn't the highlight for HR consultant and blogger John Ingham. Writing in his Strategic HCM blog he said:

"The best session at CIPD11 by far was on efficiency and performance and was delivered by John Greatrex, Group HR Director at Unipart, and Franceso Mereu, Director, HR, Corporate Planning and CSR at Toyota Motor Europe."

Ingham also helpfully provided links to all the blogs he could find at the conference, pointing out that four years ago he was one of only four bloggers present.

Another speaker, management guru Marcus Buckingham attacked formulaic models of competency and strategy for stifling innovation. It is better to play to people's personal strengths, Buckingham argued.

And finally, the RapidBI blog concluded that there was a common thread in many speeches which is that employee engagement is all about understanding business customers
