Would you choose HR again?

ChooseHRAgainXpertHRBenchmarking.jpgHas the recent arrival of the New Year prompted you to consider whether you want to remain in your current role, or perhaps try something new? Indeed, if you could have your whole career over, would you choose HR as your profession again?

This latter question was put to participants in XpertHR's HR careers survey for 2011/2012.

Overall, three-fifths of UK HR professionals say that they would choose HR as a career if they could start their career over again (XpertHR Benchmarking subscription required).

Interestingly, the survey reveals that "HR lifers" would be less likely to choose HR again than those who did not start out in HR.
The XpertHR survey of HR careers in 2011/2012 is based on responses from 668 UK HR professionals. Subscribers to XpertHR Benchmarking can drill down into the complete benchmarking data from the survey.

UPDATE 1 (Monday 30 January 2012):
Godson HR Group President Michael Janas has posted his response to the question "Would you choose HR again?" to the related discussion on Focus.com. Janas says: "No. It has become a nightmare of legal, regulatory, and ER/LR issues." Click here to read Janas' response in full.

UPDATE 2 (Wednesday 1 February 2012):
A number of new additions to the related Focus.com debate, posing the simple question "Would you Choose HR again?" - and all are in the affirmative! These include the following:
  • Mark Herbert says: "Yes I would. [...] I have 'progessed' through HR to executive management and into management consulting. It is my focus on the right people and creating alignment that has always facilitated my success. If we look at where we are today HR has a huge opportunity to recast itself and be a significant partner. If we squander it then shame on us...."
  • Howie Appel says: "Yes, I would . Although my focus is on recruitment, it is a very important part of the HR department."
  • Rebecca Mazin says: "Yes, working to provide individuals and organizations with tangible tools and techniques to help them grow and succeed is very satisfying."
  • Jennifer Payne says: "Yes I would. My perception of what HR is and can be has changed drastically over the years. [...] I've been exposed to management development, learning & development, talent management, succession planning, and so many other areas of focus that I find so much more exciting and fulfilling than issue resolution and legal compliance. Knowing what I know now, I'd be even more likely to choose HR as a profession than I was back then!"

Fascinating post and it makes me wonder - Do other professions ask this? As for my answer, absolutely !! HR is by far the best profession that has the largest ability to affect and influence an organization across all departments. Few professions have this capability.

I do wonder though if other professions are as introspective as we tend to be. It's great data and research, but why do we feel compelled to justify what we do? If other professions had the chance to ask this would they?

I'd love to see more HR professionals stand firm and be excited and proud about what we do. It would change the landscape of the workplace, and that would be amazing to see and be a part of !!

I think by choosing HR I made a Wise decision and I would go for it Again! Early in my career while working as an intern, I realized the potential and the influence I could have as an HR professional. I feel blessed to have followed such a wonderful career path. I think Steve people should ask this question to themselves because few people fail to realize whether they are on the right career path or this is what they actually want to do?. We don't need to justify unless we enjoy what we do.
