HR 24/7: Around-the-clock HR?

Houses Of Parliment Clock Tower (Big Ben)

Is HR the profession that never sleeps?

Is HR always on your mind?
For many in the HR profession, HR is a 24/7 deal: whether it's on your mind even in your "downtime," or if your job requires you sometimes to burn the proverbial midnight oil or to be available at all hours of the day and night, at a moment's notice.

And we can be certain that somewhere around the world, somebody will be at work on HR matters at any time, day or night!

In other words, HR is truly "24/7."

The idea of HR 24/7 occurred to me yesterday, following a Twitter exchange with US HR VP Jay Kuhns (who is also the author of the highly-recommended No Excuses HR blog).

Jay tweeted that he was "heading into the hospital" where he works in the wee small hours of the morning "to surprise a night shift RN [Registered Nurse] with an award. Good stuff!"

In my reply to Jay, I made up a new Twitter hashtag: #HR247 (i.e. "HR 24/7"). I'm very pleased to report that - as sometimes happens on Twitter - a number of other people picked up on this hashtag and started using it.

The 'conversation that nevers sleeps' meets the 'profession that never sleeps'?
Social media allow us to take part in "the conversation that never sleeps" (as UK blogger Mervyn Dinnen memorably phrased it). So why shouldn't there be a place within the world of social media for a "conversation that never sleeps" that is devoted to HR?

#HR247: The Twitter hashtag for HR 24/7!
With this in mind, I'd like to invite any and all HR professionals currently using Twitter to check out the discussions around the #HR247 hashtag - and possibly to consider using it on some of your own tweets.

I'd love to see this hashtag take off as a place where HR professionals can tap into their very own "conversation that never sleeps," devoted to what we might call "the profession that never sleeps!"

Thank you for taking the time to comment here, Jay, and thank you too for inspiring me to write this post in the first place.
You make a great point there - that for so many in HR (if not everybody), "our work never stops."
I hope this new week is off to a great start for you!

Michael - Both you and Jay are spot on with this 24/7 approach. What I'd like to add is that we need to be accessible, as well as available, for employees with this approach.
It can't be a focus that our profession never stops while others do. I think it would be better if it's how we focus and approach this great field knowing that we're putting people first 24/7 - not that it's a profession that consumes us.
Knowing both you and Jay gives me peace knowing that we're looking at this positively to see how HR can be integral and effective around the clock.
