I have a general interest in employment issues, and am especially enthused by the “softer” side of employer/employee relations and people management. As a writer for Employment Review, my features have recently focused on topics such as training, workplace bullying, and employer policies on relationships at work. In particular, I have built up a broad knowledge of learning and development.
I tend to cling to the belief that a happy employee is a more productive worker, and am therefore interested in organisations that “put their people first”, especially where this policy has positive results. I try to keep abreast of the latest trends in the field of employee engagement – an area that can touch on all sorts of intriguing topics including employee surveys, absence management and internal communications.
Half of my working week is spent writing for Employment Review. During the other half I write for Occupational Pensions, which (in my opinion) is an invaluable information resource for pension professionals. Since joining IRS in 2001, I have also written for Equal Opportunities Review and Pay and Benefits Bulletin.
Prior to 2001 I worked for a while as editor on a personal finance website and spent several years working as a freelance journalist. I have written on education and careers for The Sunday Times, the Times Educational Supplement and Real magazine. I wrote regularly on personal finance for The Sunday Times.
