I write on a wide range of employment issues, but have a particular interest in the organisation and structure of the HR function itself. Recent research has focused on the way HR departments assess the effectiveness of what they do, and how they interact with non-HR managers.
Other interests include collective employment relations and the role of trade unions, and the rather broad topic of innovation – how organisations respond to change and either manage it or are reshaped by forces beyond their control.
Away from the office, I have an interest in social and political history. I write for a number of family history magazines, and in my spare time run the Chartist Ancestors and Trade Union Ancestors websites.
My day job is as managing editor for the IRS Group, responsible for the day-to-day management of Employment Review and oversight of other titles within the group. Since starting my career in local newspaper journalism, I have worked for daily and weekly papers, political journals, a trade union and in print and online for a public sector management title.
