Sales and marketing staff pay rises at 4.6%

Sales and marketing staff saw their basic pay rise by an average of 4.6% over the past year, according to CELRE's 2008-09 Sales and Marketing Staff Salary Survey.

The report, published today, is based on data from 124 companies and 11,536 individuals - the biggest sample since the survey was launched 20 years ago.

The report shows that sales executives saw their basic pay rise by an average 4.3% over the past 12 months, while total earnings, including bonus and commission payments, went up by 5.3%

Marketing staff received an annual increase in basic salary of 5.5%, with total earnings also rising by 5.5%.

The increases mean that the median basic salary for a sales and marketing director now stands at £128,500, with total earnings including bonus and commission of £168,800. At department manager level, the equivalent figures are £60,000 and £71,690.

Both basic salaries and total earnings rose faster in manufacturing and production industries (at 6.4% and 8.3% respectively) than in either the finance, high-tech and services sector (4.1% and 4.5%) or the non-manufacturing sector generally (4.0% and 4.4%).

The survey also reveals central London to have been a salaries hotspot. Basic salaries rose by 7.2% in inner London, compared with 5.1% in outer London, 4.3% in the South East and 4.1% in the rest of the UK.

It is worth noting that the data records changes in pay over the 12 months to 1 September 2008 - before the crash in share prices and economic downturn.

In the coming year, employers expect to see basic pay for sales and marketing staff rise by 3.7%, with an anticipated increase in the pay bill of 4.4%

The report is based on data covering 10 job levels, from sales and marketing director to clerical staff, and 29 job functions, including field sales, sales support and customer services, inbound and outbound telesales, marketing, public relations and market research.

The survey produces separate salary tables and trend data on 8,442 sales executives in 72 companies and 3,037 marketing staff in 104 companies.
